Classroom Instruction for Florida Security Officer Licensure

Class D License: Unarmed Security Officer

Purpose

The Class D license is required for individuals seeking employment as unarmed security guards in Florida.

Instructional Requirements

 Total Hours: 40 hours of classroom training, usually divided into two 20-hour segments (Part I and Part II).

 Curriculum Includes:

o Legal aspects and liability

o Basic security officer duties and responsibilities

o Patrol techniques and procedures

o Emergency procedures and fire safety

o Observation skills and report writing

o Public relations and professionalism

o Terrorism awareness

o Access control and alarm systems

o Crime and accident prevention techniques

o Ethics and conduct

Instruction Format

 Delivered by a licensed security officer school or instructor.

 Includes lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and practical exercises.

 Ends with written and/or practical assessments.

Class G License: Statewide Firearm License (Armed Security Officer)

Purpose

The Class G license permits security officers to carry a firearm while on duty.

Instructional Requirements

 Prerequisite: Must already hold a Class D license or be in the process of obtaining one.

 Total Hours: 28 hours of classroom and range training.

 Curriculum Includes:

o Florida firearm laws and use-of-force statutes

o Firearm safety and handling

o Marksmanship fundamentals

o Firearm maintenance

o Legal use of firearms and deadly force

o Judgmental shooting scenarios

o Liability and civil/criminal consequences

o Range qualification (live-fire exercises with a passing score required)

Instruction Format

 Conducted by a licensed Class K firearms instructor.

 Combines classroom lectures, legal instruction, and practical range time.

 Includes written examinations and live-fire proficiency testing.

General Notes

 Attendance for all required hours is mandatory.

 Successful completion of instruction and passing required exams is necessary before applying for licensure.

 Ongoing annual requalification is required for Class G (firearms) license.

Summary

Florida requires 40 hours of classroom training for the unarmed Class D license and 28 hours of classroom and range training for the armed Class G license, each with a specific curriculum, practical exercises, and examinations. All instruction must be delivered by licensed instructors or schools, and completion is mandatory for licensure Security Guard Licensure programs.
